A bit of an adaptation of a prayer by Dietrich Bonhoeffer for the new year (my adaptations in italics):
O God, early in the year we cry to You.
Help us to pray
And to concentrate our thoughts on You:
We cannot do this alone.
In us there is darkness,
But with You there is light;
We are lonely, but You do not leave us;
We are feeble in heart, but with You there is help;
We are restless, but with You there is peace.
In us there is bitterness, but with You there is patience;
We do not understand Your ways, but You know the way for us…
Restore us to liberty-to fullness of life, freedom, and wholeness as Your children,
And enable us so to live now
That we may answer before You and before humanity,
Lord, whatever this year may bring,
Your name be praised.
Amen. May this year be one full of peace and blessing for you friends; may you find help when you especially need it, strength for the tasks you are called to do-including those tasks of attempting to successfully fashion language-a wonderful, perilous gift-into something that is a meaningful expression of whatever you have to say, and especially, of that which is true, noble, lovely, praiseworthy, life-giving, healing, etc.
Peace of Christ be with your spirit,
